I probably have the absolute best job in the world; I am a travel critic for a national magazine, and I get to go exploring new places all over the world just to live and experience them and then write down my thoughts and feelings afterwards. It was a bit of a strange path that led me to actually becoming a legitimate traveling critic. I first started off as a copywriter for a marketing firm and would simply write article after article with various research components ranging a full spectrum of topics as outlined by our clients’ needs.
I got to work with some pretty cool people, but after a while, when there were just no opportunities presenting themselves for career advancement to manage the client accounts or even to work in the sales department, I realized I needed a change. So I got on board with a travel agency and started working with them to provide travel packages to large corporations that would hire our company to plan and coordinate whatever they needed from company retreats to simple business trips.
This work was fairly interesting, and the perks of working with a travel agency obviously includes travel bonuses and discounts! So I was very happy working with them for a long while.
But, eventually I found the work to be a little bit monotonous and I wanted more of a challenge. So, once again, I picked up shop and decided to travel while doing some freelance writing on the side. I kept a personal blog of my adventures and included some personal critiques of the places that I would visit.
Funnily enough, I got a call one day from a national magazine because apparently someone had seen my blog and decided that they wanted me to write exclusively for them! This was such a shock because I was not expecting to find a paycheck doing traveling critiques, but I never even dreamed that I would be doing it for such a high profile company!
The shock wore off quickly as I realized I needed to commit immediately! Two weeks later, the magazine put me up in a temporary housing DC in Washington DC and I was writing my first articles!
