I am so in love with my job as a food photographer that I often need to pinch myself to make sure I’m not dreaming! I’ll often feel like it’s too good to be true, especially in instances when I am actually paid to go out to places like Washington DC, put up in an amazing furnished apartment in Washington D.C. through Attache Property Management, LLC, and then get to take pictures of delicious foods.
I do have to admit that I sort of stumbled into this new line of my profession by accident and not really with any specific intentions. Having been working photo shoots for a number of years, and studying some new techniques in portraiture, I was asked by a friend of mine who manages a restaurant if I could do a small shoot of some of his menu items for the new marketing brochure they were producing.
Just helping my friend out, I was a little surprised by how much fun this particular shoot was to do! And of course, the metaphorical cherry on top meant that we got to sample some of the food too!
But in all seriousness, I had zero expectations for how this shoot would go, and was just trying to give my friend a break. But what I discovered through this shoot was an entirely new avenue for growth in my career that I was not aware even existed prior to my foray into the field.
I asked my friend to refer me to anyone else in the food community who may find use for photography, looking to get into a few more shoots to build out my food portfolio. She was happy to oblige, and again I was surprised, this time by just how many people were in the market for this kind of photography.
Flash forward a couple of years, and here I am being flown out to Washington DC to photograph a 5-star restaurant’s menu! It still doesn’t even feel real, even when I wake up in my furnished apartment in Washington D.C. and get dressed for work.
